Triggerfish

A powerful-toothed fish with an oval body

An oval, laterally compressed bony fish, the triggerfish has extremely strong teeth able to crush sea urchins and shells. It fiercely defends its nest.

Life cycle (4 stages)

Eggs

The female lays in a bowl dug in the sand and guards the nest.

Larva

Larvae hatch quickly and drift in the plankton.

Juvenile

Young fish join the reef and hide in crevices.

Adult

Territorial, it defends its nest, sometimes aggressively, during breeding.

Physical changes

  • Oval body strongly compressed laterally.
  • Lockable first dorsal spine that wedges the fish inside a crevice.

During nesting season a titan triggerfish may charge divers who come too close: always leave its territory sideways, never upwards.
