World Oceans Day, 8 June
Together, we have the power to protect the ocean
Welcome to the online resource of the international World Oceans Day community, the largest celebration of our blue planet.
Every 8 June, millions of people in more than 150 countries come together to recall the vital role of the ocean: it produces more than half of the oxygen we breathe, regulates the climate and feeds billions of people.
Thailand Diving takes part every year with clean-up dives, talks in Phuket schools and awareness outings open to everyone.
The key issues
Plastic
- More than 8 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year. A trained diver can remove several kilos of debris per dive.
Climate
- The ocean absorbs about 30% of emitted CO₂. Acidification weakens corals, shellfish and plankton.
Sustainable fishing
- Supporting responsible fisheries and refusing threatened species allows stocks to rebuild.
Marine protected areas
- 30% of the ocean protected by 2030: the global target Thai marine parks contribute to.
Ten responsible-diver habits
- 01Master your buoyancy so you never touch the coral.
- 02Take nothing, leave nothing behind.
- 03Use sunscreen free of oxybenzone.
- 04Refuse single-use plastic on board.
- 05Bring back any debris you find during the dive.
- 06Never feed or chase marine animals.
- 07Choose mooring lines instead of dropping anchor.
- 08Avoid close-up flash photography on fragile species.
- 09Share your sightings with scientific programmes.
- 10Raise awareness around you about how fragile reefs are.
